Thaipusam Procession to Batu Caves


The festival of Thaipusam in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia begins with a parade at midnight on the eve of Thaipusam. This parade starts from the Maha Mariamman Temple in the center of Kuala Lumpur city. At the center of this procession is a deity of Lord Murugan on a chariot.

About 100,000 devotees gather in Kuala Lumpur city to walk with the chariot from Kuala Lumpur city center to Batu Caves.

From here the chariot will traverse a distance of about 15km until it reaches the famous Batu Caves temple of Kuala Lumpur. The entire procession will take between six to ten hours to reach Batu Caves, with some devotees walking ahead of the chariot and others following slowly behind it.

Thaipusam is a festival that is marked by acts of penance. Many of the thousands of devotees who join this parade will carry milk pots on their head, while some will walk the entire distance bare feet.

Upon reaching the caves, devotees head to the beautifully adorned Murugan shrine, where the milk that they had devotedly carried is offered as abhishegam for a small Vel that is placed below the main Murugan deity.

Devotees wait in line to deliver the milk they carried with their kavadi for abishegam to Lord Murugan's Vel. Thus concludes days of spiritual observances for the betterment of ones future with the blessings of Lord Muruga.
