SVA Implementation Update, July 09
Progress on the creation of Sadhana Visionary Academy as of July 2009
The idea of creating a secondary Hindu school based on a recognized International education curricula in Malaysia was first developed in 2007. It was based on the welfare work of Alagappa Nagappan (Founder of PKAM) and missionary work of Guhanathaswami (Director of Center for Hindu Studies, Malaysia). It was obvious that the best type of charity that can uplift the disadvantaged and rural community, particularly the Indian Hindu community to provide them with quality secular education that incorporates Hindu based value system.
After its initial inception in 2007 research began in looking for a suitable education system that would fit the requirements of SVA. The founders of SVA finally settled on using the American Homeschooling curriculum. The research uncovered that the American Homeschooling was already established in Malaysia, especially through the efforts of Christian churches, and that its syllabus was flexible enough to incorporate Hindu studies as an accredited subject.
After establishing the curriculum the founders of SVA have been working with two Tamil schools under the care of PKAM, that is the Lenggeng and Kirby Tamil schools in Negeri Sembilan to create awareness amongst the teachers, students and parents there about American Homeschooling and the advantage of SVA as a school that provides structured Hindu based values education. Meetings were held with the PTA of both Lenggeng and Kirby Tamil schools.
Initial diagnostic tests to qualify students for SVA have been conducted in both these schools and an initial list of students for enrollment have been identified. The students will be further vetted based on their performance in their UPSR examinations. Currently the founders of SVA are making progress identifying the infrastucture for SVA, the warden and teachers. SVA is due for launch in 2010.
SVA is a pioneer project in Malaysia. It is the first Hindu School in Malaysia with room and board facilities for students that is based on the traditional gurukkula schools that used to be part of Hindu culture.
